Under what dental conditions Teeth Whitening is not advised?
Persons with certain Dental Issues are also not eligible Extensive tooth loss. Presence of cracks and hypoplastic areas. Extensive restorations. Patients with Dentinal hypersensitivity, severe enamel loss due to erosion or abrasion. Patients with unrealistic expectations. Severe tetracycline stains with banding. What is the process of Teeth Whitening?
Teeth Whitening aka Teeth Bleaching What is Teeth Bleaching? Lightening of discolorations of teeth through the application of chemical agents to oxidize the organic pigmentation of teeth.
Preliminary preparation consists of thorough oral prophylaxis to remove stains, plaque and deposits. Shade is noted prior to commencing treatment. Baseline photograph is taken. Lips and Gingiva around teeth is protected both labially and palatially with a liberal coating of Vaseline or petroleum jelly. Heavy gauge rubber dam is used to isolate the individual teeth and secured cervically with dental floss. Superoxol solution is applied drop by drop from a syringe taking care not to spill the solution and also avoid touching it with bare hands. A special bleaching lamp is placed two feet from the patient’s face and left there for 20-30 minutes. Light and heat from the lamp accelerates the release of nascent oxygen from the superoxol thus producing the bleaching effect. The solution should be periodically replenished. Care should be taken to protect the patient’s eyes with protective glasses. Once the procedure is done rinse with the water and followed by removal of rubber dam. Procedure is repeated several times till the desired shade is observed.
Is Teeth Scaling mandatory before Teeth Whitening?
Yes, of course. Teeth Whitening will not have the desired result without undergoing Teeth Scaling First.
What is Laser Teeth Whitening?
In Advanced Laser Teeth Whitening Procedure power bleaching labial and palatal attached gingiva is covered with Light-cured resin gel or liquid rubber dam and instead of bleaching lamp laser or xenon plasma arc lamps are used for accelerated results. Advantages are rapid bleaching effects, less heat generation, less patient compliance and disadvantages are expensive and tissue protection is important.
Does Teeth Whitening cause Tooth Sensitivity?
Yes. One may observe teeth sensitivity immediately after the procedure. This will gradually reduce in 2-3 days.
Does Teeth Whitening Damage Tooth Enamel?
No. Teeth Whitening does not damage the Tooth Enamel. Infact the agents in the teeth whitening process, act as a shield to the tooth enamel.
Can Baking Soda or Lemon be used to Whiten Teeth?
No. This is a very common question. Though the effects are visible, the acidic concentration of both baking soda and lemon are very high which will result in enamel erosion further leading to teeth sensitivity. Always consult a dentist for Teeth whitening.
How Often Can Teeth Bleaching be Done?
Teeth Bleaching or Teeth Whitening can be done once in a year or every 2 years. As the results are long lasting when well maintained, first timers can undergo second sitting after 1 year and for regulars it is advised every 2 years.

Advantages are simple & safe procedures, less chair time, efficient for mild to moderate stains. Disadvantages are transient hypersensitivity, gingival irritation may occur, prolonged time for bleaching effects to be seen, patient compliance is a major factor in the success of this procedure.
